about

This album features a selection of the pieces I have written over many years, for pianist Sarah Walker.

Five of the pieces come from a series of piano works called "Abstracts". These reflect a fascination with sculpture, in particular the work of Barbara Hepworth. I was fascinated by her use of mass and space, and I tried to reflect that in the music. In a way, what I am doing here is placing musical objects within space, or silence to be precise. I also tried to create the impression that the musical objects are being looked at from different angles. The "edges" of the objects were quite important to me - sounds are rarely allowed to decay completely. I spent a long time trying to judge the balance between sound and silence in each piece.

The nature of the musical material in each piece can vary considerably: Abstract Four is largely energetic and often dissonant. Abstract Nine is calm and meditative.
The other three pieces here, placed at the beginning, middle and end of the sequence, are far from abstract. "Haunted Carbonek" is inspired by a mysterious castle from Arthurian legend, found in the "wastelands" of Wales. "Hadenesque" grew from a request to write a melody for bass harmonica. The title was originally merely a performance instruction for the opening line - play in the manner of Charlie Haden (the great jazz bassist). It now stands as a tribute to that great musician. The final piece, "Bliss" is a simple lullaby, written for my friends Thusitha Jayasundera and Simon Allen on the birth of their son Fred.
