about

This quartet is very much a vehicle for Martin’s melodic and atmospheric compositions, and as such is probably the closest he gets to a straight ahead jazz project.

The band’s debut recording, Rickety Racket, was released at the beginning of the first lockdown and received warm reviews.

The absence of gigs for eighteen months left Martin with plenty of time to compose new tunes and this recording presents a selection of those, recorded in a relaxed two day session at David Beebee’s studio in Sussex. The music ranges from lyrical ballads and waltzes, via Americana, to quirky swingers and driving grooves, and draws on a range of influences including Thelonious Monk, Paul Motian, Louis Sclavis and more.

Track listing:

A New Pavan For These Distracted Times
The title is a nod to “A Sad Pavan For These Distracted Times” written at the time of the English Civil War by Thomas Tomkins.

2. Baby Nou
A portrait in sound of a small white kitten rushing round the house causing fluffy chaos.

3. Captain Call and Gus MacCrae
A slice of Americana, named after two characters from Larry McMurtry’s great Western novel “Lonesome Dove”

4. In Silence The Spirits Speak
I spent a great deal of time in the first lockdown listening to early albums by the great Malian singer Oumou Sangare and this represents my attempt to draw some flavours from her music into my own work.

5. Solstice Bells
A harmonically lush jazz waltz.
An old melody that I originally composed to accompany a poem by John Betjeman.

6. Soft Ambush
A funky little groove - another one for the cat lovers who will know what the title means.

7. Dimmet
An old word for twilight. Another lockdown tune - country walks in idyllic warmth, and a strange but wonderful absence of traffic noise. Nothing to be heard but bird song.

8. Nette’s Move
Dedicated to two musical friends, singer Nette Robinson and her saxophonist husband Tony Woods.
As well as being a wonderful jazz vocalist Nette is also a chess expert and an accomplished belly dancer, and the title and music reflect that.

It’s a real joy to be able to bring this music to life with three great friends and wonderful musicians.
